Enterprise-class platforms like Logstar TOS and Master Terminal deliver the depth that large ports need, but they come with substantial IT infrastructure requirements and dedicated configuration teams. Smaller depots often find that a focused SaaS tool covers 90% of their actual workflow at a fraction of the cost and setup time.
Depot software or terminal TOS: how to choose a ContPark alternative
The TOS market holds hundreds of active solutions, ranging from lean depot apps to expansive enterprise suites. Feature count is the wrong filter. The operators who make the best decisions focus on a different set of questions.
Operational scale and complexity come first. A single-site empty container depot has fundamentally different needs than a multi-terminal port handling vessel calls, rail interchange, and bonded cargo. Matching software scope to actual operational complexity prevents both over-engineering and under-serving your yard team.
Transition risk is underestimated almost universally. The main challenge most logistics operators face when switching TOS platforms is migrating data from legacy systems without disrupting active yard workflows. A phased cutover plan, with parallel running periods and clear data validation checkpoints, reduces that risk considerably.
Key evaluation criteria to work through before shortlisting:
- Integration depth: Does the platform connect to your existing gate hardware, crane systems, EDI partners, and port community systems? A TOS that requires manual data bridges creates more work, not less.
- Deployment model: Cloud-based SaaS tools deploy faster and require less internal IT, but on-premises systems give some operators more control over data residency and security configurations.
- Productivity metrics: Terminal turnaround speed, vessel handling efficiency, and gate processing times are the real measures of TOS effectiveness. Ask vendors for benchmarks from comparable operations, not just feature demos.
- Regulatory compliance: US terminal operators must account for CBP (Customs and Border Protection) data requirements, TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) access controls, and CTPAT (Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism) compliance standards when evaluating any platform.
- Support and SLA: A TOS failure during a vessel call is not a minor inconvenience. Understand exactly what response time and escalation path you get before signing.
Pro Tip: When evaluating SaaS versus enterprise-grade systems, ask the vendor for a reference site at your scale, not their largest or most impressive deployment. A 50,000 TEU per year depot needs to hear from a similar operation, not a mega-port.
Choosing between a lean SaaS tool and a full enterprise suite ultimately comes down to where your operation sits today and where it needs to be in three years. Smaller depots benefit from lighter, faster-to-deploy solutions. Large, multi-modal ports need the depth that only a comprehensive suite provides.
An overview of each ContPark alternative
Understanding what each platform actually does in practice helps narrow the shortlist faster than any feature matrix.
LogProfit targets small and mid-size container depots that need basic gate control, container tracking, and billing without the overhead of an enterprise deployment. The interface is straightforward, and setup time is measured in days rather than months.
TerminalControl sits a step up in complexity, covering structured yard planning and equipment dispatch for mid-tier terminals. It handles multi-yard configurations and gives operations managers better visibility into equipment utilization across the site.
Kalmar SmartPort is purpose-built for automated terminals running Kalmar cranes and straddle carriers. Its real value is the tight hardware-software loop: the system reads directly from Kalmar equipment, which eliminates a layer of manual data entry that plagues mixed-vendor environments.
Logstar TOS, developed by Envecon Logstar, operates at the top of the enterprise tier. It supports multi-location visibility and is deployed at some of the world's highest-volume port operations. The depth of its vessel planning, gate, and rail modules reflects decades of development for complex, multi-stakeholder environments.
GullsEye focuses on real-time container positioning and yard visibility. Operators who struggle with container location accuracy, particularly in large, dense yards, find it addresses that specific pain point well.
Envision Container Terminal Operating System covers the full terminal lifecycle, from vessel arrival through gate-out, including rail operations. It suits terminals that handle multiple cargo modes and need a single system of record across all of them.
CommTrac TOS is built around intermodal operations, with particular strength in rail and truck interchange tracking. For terminals that sit at the intersection of rail and road freight, it handles the handoff workflows that generic TOS platforms often handle poorly.
Master Terminal, from Kaleris, has a long track record across North American and European ports. Its multi-modal capabilities and billing modules are mature, and its install base in the US market means local implementation expertise is available.
Autostore comes from a different angle entirely. It is primarily an automated storage and retrieval system, more common in high-density warehouse environments than traditional container yards. Terminals exploring dense automation for specific cargo types sometimes include it in evaluations.
Mainsail covers port operations from a maritime billing and vessel scheduling perspective. It suits port authorities and terminal operators who need strong financial and scheduling tools alongside basic operational management.
BlueCargo specializes in demurrage and detention analytics. Shipping lines and freight forwarders use it to track free time, flag approaching detention charges, and dispute incorrect invoices. It is not a full TOS but fills a gap that most TOS platforms handle poorly.
Containerhub is built specifically for empty container depots. Its focus on digitizing gate-in/out, damage inspections, repair workflows, and billing makes it a direct fit for depot operators who are still running paper-based or spreadsheet-driven processes.

What does pricing look like across these platforms?
Pricing transparency varies widely across the TOS market, and most enterprise platforms do not publish rates.
LogProfit, TerminalControl, GullsEye, Envision Container TOS, CommTrac TOS, and Mainsail do not publicly list pricing. Quotes are available directly from vendors, and pricing typically depends on terminal size, user count, and module selection.
Kalmar SmartPort and Master Terminal operate on enterprise licensing models. Costs scale with terminal size, automation level, and the number of integrated systems. Implementation and configuration fees add to the total cost of ownership, and dedicated IT resources are required for ongoing management.
BlueCargo uses a subscription model, with pricing based on container volume and the number of shipping line connections. It is one of the few platforms in this space with a more transparent, usage-based structure.
Autostore pricing is project-based and tied to the physical automation infrastructure, making direct comparison with software-only TOS platforms difficult.
Containerhub operates as a SaaS subscription, with pricing structured around depot size and feature modules. The SaaS model eliminates the upfront infrastructure investment that enterprise platforms require, and deployment is measured in weeks rather than months.
For US terminal operators, the total cost of ownership calculation should include not just licensing fees but also implementation costs, data migration effort, training time, and the internal IT resources needed to maintain the system. Enterprise platforms often look cheaper per seat until those factors are included.
What makes each alternative stand out from the rest?
Every platform on this list has at least one capability that genuinely sets it apart from the others.
LogProfit stands out for its speed of deployment. A small depot can be operational within days, which matters when the alternative is months of enterprise implementation.
TerminalControl differentiates on yard planning structure. Its block planning tools give mid-tier terminals a level of operational discipline that basic depot apps cannot match.
Kalmar SmartPort is the only platform here with native, bidirectional integration with Kalmar automation hardware. For terminals running Kalmar equipment, that integration eliminates an entire category of data reconciliation problems.
Logstar TOS is distinguished by its enterprise scale and the depth of its multi-site management. Being deployed at 3 of the world's top 8 port operators is a meaningful proof point for large terminal groups evaluating long-term platform commitments.
GullsEye leads on real-time container location accuracy. Its visual yard mapping is particularly useful for dense yards where container misplacement creates costly delays.
Envision Container TOS differentiates on multi-modal coverage. Terminals handling vessel, rail, and road freight within a single operation benefit from having all three modes managed in one system.
CommTrac TOS is the strongest option for intermodal-specific workflows, particularly rail car tracking and truck appointment management at inland terminals.
Master Terminal stands out for its North American install base and the maturity of its billing and reporting modules, which have been refined through decades of real-world port deployments.
BlueCargo is the only platform here focused specifically on demurrage and detention management. For shipping lines and forwarders losing money to incorrect detention invoices, it addresses a problem that general TOS platforms largely ignore.
Containerhub differentiates on AI-driven depot automation. Its Agentic AI copilot handles routine gate decisions, flags damage inspection anomalies, and automates billing triggers, reducing the manual workload that depot staff typically carry. The EDI integration with shipping line systems and the self-service client portal add a layer of stakeholder transparency that most depot-focused tools do not offer. What do US terminal operators say about these platforms?
Published user feedback from US logistics and terminal operations professionals points to a consistent set of themes across the TOS market.
Operators using enterprise platforms like Master Terminal and Logstar TOS consistently cite depth of functionality and multi-modal support as the primary reasons for their choice. The recurring complaint is implementation complexity and the time required to configure the system to match specific terminal workflows. Several reviewers on software comparison platforms note that the gap between the demo and the live deployment can be significant, particularly for terminals without dedicated IT teams.
Mid-tier platforms like TerminalControl and GullsEye receive positive feedback for usability and faster onboarding. Users in the US market note that the learning curve is manageable for yard staff without technical backgrounds, which reduces training costs and accelerates adoption.
BlueCargo draws consistent praise from freight forwarders and shipping line operations teams for its demurrage tracking accuracy. The ability to automatically flag approaching free time deadlines and dispute incorrect invoices has direct financial impact, which users cite as the clearest ROI metric.
For a broader picture of how cargo tracking systems fit into terminal operations, ForwarderOne's business guide covers the integration points between tracking tools and TOS platforms in practical detail.
Containerhub users in the depot operations space highlight the reduction in paper-based processes as the most immediate operational improvement. Gate-in/out digitization with photo capture eliminates the manual reconciliation step that previously consumed hours of administrative time per shift.
How well do these platforms work with existing terminal hardware and software?
Hardware and software compatibility is where TOS evaluations often stall, and for good reason. A platform that cannot talk to your existing gate cameras, OCR readers, crane control systems, or port community network creates integration work that quickly erodes any cost advantage.
Kalmar SmartPort has the deepest native hardware integration on this list, but only for Kalmar equipment. Terminals running mixed-vendor fleets will need custom connectors.
Logstar TOS and Master Terminal both support broad EDI connectivity and have established connectors for major port community systems used in the US, including connections to CBP's Automated Targeting System data flows. Their long deployment histories mean that most common hardware configurations have been addressed in previous implementations.
Envision Container TOS and CommTrac TOS support standard port hardware interfaces, including OCR gate cameras and RFID readers, with configuration required for site-specific setups.
BlueCargo integrates with carrier systems and ERP platforms via API, but it is not designed to connect directly to physical terminal hardware.
Containerhub integrates with shipping line systems via EDI standards, which covers the primary data exchange requirement for empty container depot operations. Its container yard management module is designed to work alongside existing gate hardware rather than replace it, reducing the infrastructure investment required for deployment.
For US operators, compatibility with CBP data requirements and TWIC access control systems should be confirmed with any vendor before signing. These are not optional compliance items, and retrofitting compliance into a deployed system is expensive.
What compliance and security features matter for US terminal operations?
US container terminal operators face a specific set of regulatory requirements that not every TOS vendor addresses adequately.
CBP's Automated Manifest System (AMS) and the Importer Security Filing (ISF) requirements mean that any TOS handling inbound container data must support accurate, timely data submission. Platforms with built-in AMS connectivity reduce the risk of compliance gaps that can result in cargo holds or fines.
CTPAT certification is increasingly a baseline expectation for terminals handling cargo for major US importers. A TOS that supports CTPAT documentation workflows, access logging, and audit trails makes the certification process significantly more manageable.
TWIC integration for gate access control is a practical requirement at US marine terminals. Platforms that support TWIC card readers at gate lanes and log access events in the TOS record create a defensible audit trail for TSA inspections.
Data security standards matter as well. Cloud-based SaaS platforms should be able to demonstrate SOC 2 Type II compliance or equivalent, which confirms that their data handling, access controls, and incident response processes meet recognized security standards. On-premises deployments shift that responsibility to the terminal's own IT team, which is a meaningful consideration for smaller operations without dedicated security staff.
Containerhub's SaaS architecture centralizes data security management on the vendor side, which reduces the compliance burden for depot operators who lack internal IT security resources.
Containerhub is a modern depot alternative worth evaluating
Most of the platforms on this list were built for the complexity of large port operations. Containerhub takes a different approach: it is built specifically for the empty container depot, the part of the container supply chain that has historically been the last to get purpose-built software.
The practical difference shows up immediately. Containerhub digitizes gate-in/out with photo capture, automates damage inspection workflows with AI assistance, manages repair orders from damage identification through billing, and connects directly to shipping line systems via EDI. The Agentic AI copilot handles routine decisions and surfaces exceptions, so depot staff spend less time on administrative review and more time on actual operations. The self-service client portal gives shipping lines real-time visibility into their container inventory without requiring manual reporting from depot staff.
For depot operators evaluating contpark.com alternatives, Containerhub offers a focused, fast-to-deploy SaaS option that covers the full depot workflow without the infrastructure overhead of an enterprise TOS. You can explore the full feature set on the empty container depot management software page.
