Glossary

Definitions commonly used in container depots and in ContainerHub.


Bay — Row or zone of stacking positions; often identified by block and slot.

CEDEX — EDI message reporting receipt of an empty container at the depot.

CFS (Container Freight Station) — Facility where LCL cargo is consolidated or deconsolidated.

Check digit — Control digit for ISO 6346 container numbers.

CODECO — EDI message for container arrival/departure at a location (port, depot, etc.).

Container grade — Equipment condition classification (e.g. cargo-worthy).

Demurrage — Charge for storage beyond free time (often port-side).

Depot — Container depot; storage, inspection, and repair facility for empty or laden units.

DESTIM — EDI for estimated arrival at destination.

Detention — Charge when the container is held by the customer beyond agreed free time (often off-port).

Dwell time — Time a container stays on site before the next move.

EIR (Equipment Interchange Receipt) — Interchange receipt documenting container condition in/out of a facility.

Free storage — Free storage period before storage/demurrage charges apply.

Gate move — Gate In or Gate Out recorded at the depot gate.

ICD (Inland Container Depot) — Inland depot away from the port.

Interchange — Formal handover of equipment between parties, documented with EIR.

IICL — Institute standardizing inspection and damage coding.

ISO 6346 — Standard for container identification structure (owner, serial, check digit).

Leasing — Container lease from line or operator to lessor.

Lessor — Container leasing company (e.g. equipment lessors).

M&R — Maintenance and repair (similar to MNR).

MNR — Depot/tank farm maintenance & repair with quotation and approval.

Off-dock — Storage/depot outside the port gate.

PTI (Pre-Trip Inspection) — Pre-trip inspection before loading or dispatch.

Slot — Single yard position for one container.

Survey — Formal inspection (in/out/damage).

TEU — Twenty-foot equivalent unit; 40' ≈ 2 TEU.

Tier — Vertical stack level.

WESTIM — EDI for estimated arrival at load port (example message family).

Yard — Depot stacking area.
